The God Who Names the Stars Knows Your Name
“He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.” — Psalm 147:4–5
Have you ever read a passage of Scripture and simply had to stop because your mind couldn’t quite grasp what you were reading? Or you were just in awe at the God of Scripture? That was me as I meditated on Psalm 147 this week.
Before this verse, the psalmist reminds us that God “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). What a tender picture of our compassionate Shepherd. Then he lifts our eyes from our personal sorrows to the vastness of the heavens:
“He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.”
The transition almost seems surprising until we realize what the psalmist is doing. He is reminding us that the God who gently binds the wounds of His people, is the very same God who effortlessly governs the entire universe.
As I thought about this, my mind went back to when my children were little. One of my toddlers would sometimes come to me in complete distress because they couldn’t find their favorite toy. Or maybe it was their Baba (blankie). To them, it was a genuine crisis. At that very same moment, I might have been preparing dinner, paying bills, remembering tomorrow’s lesson plans, Little League schedule, listening for another child in the next room, and planning everything that still needed to be accomplished before bedtime.
My little one had no idea how many things I was carrying in my mind. Yet even with all of that, I still cared deeply about their tears. Now multiply that—not by a thousand or even a million—but by infinity.
God is sustaining every galaxy, governing every nation, directing every detail of history, holding every atom together, and numbering every star in the heavens. Yet, He is never too busy to hear the whispered prayers of one of His daughters.
The gap between my understanding and that of my toddler was small. The gap between my understanding and God’s is immeasurable.
The stars don’t distract Him from caring for His children. In fact, the psalmist intentionally places these truths side by side.
He heals broken hearts.
He names every star.
One truth magnifies the other. Astronomers estimate there are hundreds of billions of stars in our own galaxy, with hundreds of billions of galaxies beyond that. Human minds cannot even comprehend such numbers.
God doesn’t estimate.
He knows every single one.
He named every single one. WOW! Mind boggling!
Then the psalmist declares:
“Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.” (Psalm 147:5)
Beyond measure.
No limits.
No exhaustion.
No confusion.
No forgotten details.
No divided attention.
Have you ever felt as though your burdens were too small to bring before God because surely He has greater things to worry about? I do this way more than I’d like to admit.
Psalm 147 gently corrects that thinking. The God who upholds the universe never has to choose between governing galaxies and comforting His children. He does both perfectly.
Jesus echoes this beautiful truth in Matthew 10:29–31:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father… Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
The One who numbers the stars also numbers the hairs on your head (Luke 12:7).
The One whose understanding is beyond measure knows every fear you have never spoken out loud.
The One who governs the universe also walks with you through the ordinary moments of your day—the doctor’s appointment, the piles of laundry, the difficult marriage, the prodigal child, the financial uncertainty, the lonely afternoon, sick loved ones, empty nest sadness, and the sleepless nights.
Nothing that concerns His daughters is insignificant to Him. Nothing! Oh how He loves us! Believe that sister! Perhaps that is exactly why Isaiah reminds us:
“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name… not one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26)
And only a few verses later, in one of my favorite books of the Bible, Isaiah asks:
“Why do you say… ‘My way is hidden from the LORD’? … Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God… His understanding is unsearchable.” (Isaiah 40:27–28)
What a comfort!
The God who has enough wisdom to govern the stars certainly has enough wisdom to govern my life!
Sister, if your heart is weary today, lift your eyes.
Look beyond your circumstances and behold your God. (Isaiah 40:9)
He is greater than your fears.
Greater than your unanswered questions.
Greater than your suffering.
Greater than your future.
And because He is so infinitely great, you can rest in knowing that He has not and never will overlook you.
The God who names every star also knows your name.
And that is reason enough to trust Him today.
