One of our great comforts we have is knowing that our salvation does not rest upon the strength of our grip on Christ, but upon Christ's grip on us. There is an important difference between God's preservation and our perseverance, and understanding that difference can bring tremendous peace to our hearts. Because God preserves His people, we are able to persevere. Those two truths always belong together. Preservation is God's work. Perseverance is the believer's response. Yet even our perseverance is made possible by the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
Sometimes people picture the Christian life as if we are hanging over the edge of a cliff, desperately trying to keep from falling. They think the secret is simply holding on tighter. But that is not the picture Scripture gives us. The good news of the gospel is that God is holding us. The Father chose us, the Son redeemed us, and the Holy Spirit seals and preserves us until the day we stand before Christ in glory. The Apostle Paul reminds us of this beautiful truth in Ephesians 1:13-14. The Holy Spirit is God's seal upon every believer. He is the guarantee that what God has begun, He will certainly finish. Our confidence does not rest in our own determination, but in God's unfailing promise.
This does not mean believers become passive. Quite the opposite. Because God is preserving us, we continue walking with Christ. Because the Spirit dwells within us, we keep trusting Him. When life becomes difficult, we are not called to manufacture strength from within ourselves. Instead, we let go of this world and cling to Christ. Someone may ask, "How do I keep trusting when everything around me seems to be falling apart?" The answer is wonderfully simple. You remember that even when your hands feel weak, God's hands are not. You cling to Christ because He is already holding you. The Holy Spirit strengthens your faith, comforts your heart, convicts you when you wander, and gently leads you back to your Savior again and again. That is why Paul tells us to walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16.
The Christian life is not lived in our own strength. Every step of obedience, every act of repentance, every victory over temptation, every good work, and every moment of endurance is produced by the gracious work of the Holy Spirit within us. He does far more than comfort us. He empowers us to continue following Christ every single day. This truth also changes the way we look at our scars. Every believer carries them. Some are physical. Others are emotional. Some are mental. Many are spiritual. Trials leave marks upon our lives. We have all known disappointments, losses, sicknesses, failures, grief, betrayal, and seasons when we wondered how we would ever make it through. Yet those scars are not evidence that God has abandoned us. They are reminders that He sustained us. Every scar tells a story of God's faithfulness. Every scar declares that although the battle was real, His grace proved greater. They remind us that we are still standing, not because we were strong enough, but because the Holy Spirit faithfully carried us through.
We are not trophies of our own strength. We are trophies of God's grace. That is why Jude closes his letter with one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture. We are kept for His glory and great joy. Look at Jude 24. Notice where the emphasis falls. God is able to keep us. God is able to present us blameless. God receives the glory because God accomplishes the work. Our salvation begins with grace. Our preservation continues by grace. One day our glorification will be completed by grace. From beginning to end God's grace saves us, preserves us, and gives us the strength to persevere until we stand before Christ. That confidence allows us to finish with joy. Christ has already secured our victory through His perfect life, His sacrificial death upon the cross, His burial, and His glorious resurrection from the dead. The Father accepted His sacrifice, and the Holy Spirit continues applying that finished work to every believer until the day we enter heaven.
Paul expressed this confidence beautifully in Philippians 1:6. Notice again who completes the work. God does. That does not make us careless. It makes us thankful. It makes us humble. It gives us courage to keep pressing forward even when life hurts. Now imagine what our church family would look like if every one of us truly believed these wonderful truths. Instead of living in fear, we would walk in assurance. Instead of depending upon ourselves, we would rely upon the Holy Spirit. Instead of comparing ourselves with others, we would rejoice together in God's grace. Instead of hiding our scars, we would praise God for bringing us safely through every trial. Our church would become a place where weary saints find encouragement, struggling believers find hope, and broken hearts discover the faithfulness of God. We would remind one another that none of us are standing because we are stronger than everyone else. We are standing because God has faithfully preserved every one of His children.
Paul reminds us “we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ” in Romans 8:16-17. Brothers and sisters, never forget this precious truth. Preservation is God's work. Perseverance is our daily response. Yet even our perseverance is empowered by the Holy Spirit who lives within us. We keep striving because He keeps strengthening us. We continue believing because He continues working. We continue loving Christ because He first loved us. So whenever you feel weak, remember this. Your hope has never rested in the strength of your grip on Christ. Your hope rests in His unfailing grip on you. The Father planned your salvation. The Son purchased your salvation. The Holy Spirit preserves your salvation until the day you stand before your Savior. We are not left to finish the Christian life in our own strength. The grace that saves us is the same grace that sustains us every step of the way until we reach our heavenly home. May that truth encourage your hearts today, strengthen your faith tomorrow, and give you confidence until He returns and as always Brothers and Sisters stay Bold in the gospel and strong in His Word.
